Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

An independent dental hygiene practice is a clinic owned and operated by a licensed dental hygienist. We provide preventive oral health care — cleanings, assessments, education, and whitening — without a dentist in the office. If restorative dental work is needed, we refer you to a dentist of your choosing.

We focus on preventive care and gentle hygiene services, including:

  • oral cancer screening
  • assessment of teeth, gums, and oral tissues
  • identification of areas of concern
  • treatment for tooth or gum sensitivity
  • removal of plaque and calculus (tartar)
  • fluoride application (as needed)
  • personalized education for at‑home oral care

No — we do not take x‑rays. If x‑rays are needed, we will refer you to a dentist.

No — we do not administer local anesthetic. If you require anesthetic for comfort, we can refer you to a dentist who offers it.

Your first visit includes a New Client Exam, where we:

  • review your medical history
  • assess your teeth, gums, and oral tissues
  • identify any areas of concern
  • discuss your goals and comfort preferences
  • create a personalized hygiene plan

If we identify a possible cavity or an issue requiring restorative dental work, we will refer you to a dentist — either our recommendation or one of your choosing.

Teeth Cleaning Questions

Most clients find cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitivity or gum inflammation, you may feel mild discomfort. We work gently, take breaks as needed, and can apply desensitizing products to help.

A typical cleaning takes 45–60 minutes, depending on your oral health and how long it has been since your last visit.

Most people benefit from cleanings every 6 months. If you have gum disease or buildup, you may need more frequent visits.

If your gums are inflamed or if it has been a long time since your last cleaning, some bleeding is normal. This improves with regular hygiene care.

Yes — we can apply professional desensitizing products and recommend at‑home strategies to reduce sensitivity.

You’re not alone — and you’re welcome here. We work gently, without judgment, and will help you get back on track comfortably.

Teeth Whitening Questions

Yes — professional whitening is safe when performed by a trained dental hygienist. We use products designed to protect enamel and minimize sensitivity.

Results typically last 6–12 months, depending on your diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle habits.

Some clients experience temporary sensitivity. We use gentle products and can apply desensitizing treatments to help.

Most clients see noticeable improvement — often 2–6 shades brighter — depending on your starting shade and enamel.

A whitening appointment usually takes about 2 hours from start to finish.

No — professional whitening does not damage enamel. We use safe, controlled products and monitor your comfort throughout.

CDCP Insurance Questions

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that provides dental coverage for eligible Canadians. We follow the CDCP fee schedule with no additional charges beyond the required co‑payment.

Coverage varies depending on your eligibility level. CDCP may cover:

  • dental hygiene assessments
  • cleanings
  • fluoride
  • sensitivity treatments
  • whitening (in some cases)
  • preventive care

Your co‑payment depends on your CDCP coverage level:

  • 100% coverage → no co‑payment
  • 60% coverage → 40% co‑payment
  • 40% coverage → 60% co‑payment

Please bring your CDCP card to your first visit.

Check the letter you received from CDCP. It lists your:

  • coverage level (40%, 60%, or 100%)
  • effective date
  • renewal date

Yes — CDCP clients must renew eligibility annually.

Absolutely — we welcome all clients. We’ll review fees with you before your appointment.
